Capturing the Heart of the Morning Skate: Narrative Storytelling in St. Louis
Moving beyond the standard event recap to document the raw emotion and community impact of the Friends of Kids with Cancer mission.
The Challenge: Finding Joy in the Fight
Charity event videos often fall into a "broadcast news" style that misses the intimate human experience. For this project, the goal was to:
Document a sensitive, high-stakes environment without being intrusive.
Focus on emotional resonance rather than just chronological events.
Capture the specific joy that a community event brings to families navigating cancer treatment.
The Execution: A "Documentary-First" Approach
As a St. Louis videographer with a background in sports reporting, I approached the ice at the Centene Community Ice Center with a focus on "Hero" moments:
Intimate Cinematography: Used a "fly-on-the-wall" style to capture unscripted smiles and family interactions on the ice.
Atmospheric Sound Design: Prioritized the "crunch" of skates and ambient laughter over a heavy voiceover to let the environment tell the story.
Strategic Interviewing: Utilized a low-pressure, three-query technique to gather authentic testimonials from parents in real-time.
The Win: Impact Beyond the Edit
The final film served as a high-impact asset for FOKWC fundraising and awareness efforts:
High Engagement: Successfully conveyed the tangible impact of donor contributions to a wide digital audience.
Emotional Validation: Received direct feedback from families who felt the video accurately and with dignity captured their child's experience.
National-Level Quality: Delivered a cinematic product that stands up to the standards of national non-profit media firms.
